Lab Members

We are hiring!

Field and Project Manager. The job is to manage our various projects in terms of deadlines and timelines, manage field season planning, coordinating field work, and performing some lab and field work. This position would also participate in our research, so it would be good experience for a recent B.S. graduate or someone with a Master’s who enjoys project management. Application link.

Macroinvertebrate Taxonomist, ideally M.S. level, but a B.S. with experience would be considered. We are especially looking for Chironomid identification for this role. Of course experience is ideal, but we’re willing to train someone if they enjoy that work and are interested in learning. This position would assist with research as well. Application link.

Current Lab Members

Stefanie A. Kroll, Ph.D. (she/her)
Macroinvertebrate Taxonomist,
Freshwater Ecologist

Picture
Stef is Assistant Research Faculty for the Biodiversity, Earth and Environmental Sciences Department at Drexel University and Watershed Ecology Section Leader at the Patrick Center for Environmental Research. Dr. Kroll has been using insects as indicators of disturbance in Spain, New York State and Pennsylvania for a decade.  Her research focuses on watershed conditions, bioindicators, restoration ecology and climate change effects on streams. Stefanie has a PhD in ecology from SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse, NY, where her dissertation focused on aquatic macroinvertebrate communities affected by flow regulation, land use and potential changes due to climate change.  Her post-doctoral position was in Cornell University’s Department of Entomology. She completed a master’s degree at the University of Castilla-La Mancha in Albacete, Spain where she sampled and processed macroinvertebrate samples for the Regional Water Research Center to prepare reports for regional governmental agencies that managed aquatic resources.

Tanya Dapkey, M.S. (she/her)
Entomologist,
Lab Manager

Tanya manages all active projects and technicians as well as identify specimens to genus for current projects. She has SFS Taxa Certifications for Family level and EPT (East) genus level.
Tanya  graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a MS in Environmental Studies. Her capstone, "Combining DNA Barcoding and Macroinvertebrate Sampling to Assess Water Quality" was completed in 2009. Her B.S. is in Biology from West Chester University.
She worked for 15 years in the Janzen Lab at the University of Pennsylvania where she helped develop the Lepidoptera of the ACG DNA Barcode Database.
She is also a Co-Founder of the Philly Pod of 500 Women Scientists, and served on the National Leadership Board for almost 3 years. Through this organization, Tanya has created and participated in numerous science outreach and advocacy events in the Philadelphia Area.

Mariena Hurley's Favorite Diatom, Gomphonema acuminatum
Mariena is a Phycologist specializing in Diatom Taxonomy and has an interest in their relationships with the ecosystem as a whole and possible indicators. She received her   Bachelors of Science from Albright College, Reading PA in 2013. In 2016, she received her   Master of Science degree from Central Michigan University, MI with a thesis focusing on   Diel Oxygen Swings in PA streams and their association with nutrient and benthic primary production. Mariena's favorite part about environmental science is being out in nature   participating in field work and helping provide knowledge to the public.

Current Co-ops and Students

Picture
Emma Guelzow (she/her) is starting her first year at Drexel University and she is pumped! She graduated with a BA in Biology from St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN in 2018, where she had many cool opportunities: collecting macroinvertebrates in the snow, investigating painted turtles' basking preferences, and researching Blue Chromis fish in the Bahamas.
Emma is currently earning her M.S. in Environmental Studies, focusing on ecology and macroinvertebrates (specifically snails!). She is excited to work with Dr. Kroll and the Watershed Ecology Lab at the Academy of Natural Sciences. In her free time, Emma likes to garden, play with her dog, and admire her apathetic hermit crabs!

Jeffrey Smith (he/him) is a junior at Drexel University studying Environmental Science with an Applied concentration. He is interested in conservation biology and spent his undergrad thus far with the Gonder lab, where he assisted in studies on chimpanzee behavioral ecology and regional species accumulation in Nigeria-Cameroon. He enjoys using data science tools like R and GIS to analyze the relationships between environmental factors, and helping people understand the best conservation practices available to them. On his own time, Jeff is an avid reader, writer, photographer, hiker, archer, and proud pet parent. He's eager to learn all that he can as a co-op with the macroinvert lab, and excited to get to know everyone in the watershed ecology team this spring-summer cycle. Learn more about Jeffery on his website.

Faith Echiejile (she/her) [Picture To Be Updated ASAP]
Pursuing a Ph.D. in Environmental Science from Drexel University
Faith is a first-year Ph.D. student at Drexel University focusing on climate change effects on stream ecosystems. In 2013, she received a BSc. in Industrial Chemistry from Crawford University, Nigeria. She went further to earn a master's degree in 2021 from Youngstown State University in Environmental Science, with a thesis focused on analyzing monthly suspended sediment load in streams and rivers using similar precipitation data. She is excited to work with the Watershed Ecology Lab, and she is especially looking forward to participating in fieldwork. She enjoys exploring new places and going out with friends in her free time.

Mike Alvaro (he/him) graduated from Susquehanna University in 2019 with a B.S. in Biochemistry and a minor in Biology. At Susquehanna, Mike was the president of the Biological Honors Society for two consecutive years, was a caretaker for the campus’ greenhouses, and cared for numerous terrestrial animals and aquatic habitats (fresh and saltwater). Mike has a strong passion for teaching and integrating multidisciplinary studies to his research and education. Currently, Mike is completing his Master’s degree in Environmental Science and focusing his research in Microbial Ecology. He is elated to be working with such a diverse, supportive, and talented team at the Academy of Natural Sciences’ Watershed Ecology Lab.

Madeline Worth (she/her) is a junior Environmental Studies and Sustainability student with a minor in Ecology at Drexel University. Her research interests include insect taxonomy and morphology, general Entomology, and Indigenous environmental justice.  She has developed a strong passion for Entomology through working with macroinvertebrates in Dr. Kroll's lab and working with Dr. Jon Gelhaus to identify and describe species of crane flies new to science. Outside of work, Maddie loves hiking, camping, creating art, and of course collecting insects! She is very excited to continue in the Watershed Ecology Lab for the upcoming field season!

Samantha Mosloskie (she/her) is a senior Environmental Science undergraduate student with a concentration in Biodiversity & Evolution at Drexel University. Growing up with a father who was a park ranger, she spent most of her childhood outdoors. In the past, she was an intern in the Janzen lab at University of Pennsylvania where she studied DNA barcoding of Lepidoptera. Today, she enjoys hiking, exploring new places and playing frisbee with her dog in her free time. She is very excited to be working in the Patrick Center for Environmental Research in the Aquatic Entomology department as a temp.
